A hard-earned century by Prasanta Mohapatra and a five-wicket haul by captain Ranjib Biswal helped Orissa secure two points by virtue of taking first-innings lead against Bengal on the last day of their four-day East Zone match which ended in a draw on the last day at Baripada Stadium in Baripada today. On the other hand Bengal drew blank.
Opting to bat, Orissa piled up a strong total of 402. Besides the Mohapatra century (100 off 415 balls, 11x4), Shiv Sundar Das and Abakash Khatua made valuable contributions of 95 (172 balls, 14x4) and unbeaten 89 (270 balls, 13x4) respectively. With this century, Mohapatra passed 1000 runs in first-class cricket.
In reply, Bengal were bowled out for 299 despite a century by Devang Gandhi (147). Biswal enabled Orissa take the lead, bagging five wickets for 82 runs. He, in the process, reached 100 wickets in Ranji Trophy. When the match ended in draw, Orissa were eight for no loss in the second innings. Orissa batsman Alekha Barik mades his first-class debut in this match.
